The 340. Volksgrenadier-Division was formed in September 1944 from the partially formed 572. Volksgrenadier-Division. It fought near Aachen and the Ardennes (attached to I SS Panzerkorps) and continued to fight the US forces during the retreat into Germany attached to XIII SS Armeekorps until it was destroyed in the Ruhr pocket in April 1945

The divisional staff was used to form the staff of Infanterie-Division Scharnhorst in April 1945.
