The 148. Infanterie-Division was formed on 18 September 1944 by the redesignation of the 148. Reserve-Division.
It surrendered to the the Brazilian 1st Division of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (Força Expedicionária Brasileira) in Italy in April 1945. Brazilian soldiers commented on the German surrender: "It was beautiful; they saluted, and left their guns by the roadside." (1) and "They kept their discipline until the very end." (1)
