The 230. Infanterie-Division was formed on 15 April 1942 in northern Norway from the Küstenschutzverband Alta. The division remained on security and coastal defense duties in Norway for the rest of the war.

In August 1943 soldiers from the division were scheduled to take part in Operation Forelle I-IV (Trout) to search for suspected partisan groups in the Vest-Finnmark area but the operations were cancelled after the military intelligence concluded that no such groups operated in the area. The operations were planned as companions to the successful operations of the neighbor 210. Infanterie-Division.

The members of the Heer to be awarded for the northernmost operations were the soldiers of the battalion sized contingent of some 600 men from Grenadier Regiment 349 who took part in the the raid on Spitsbergen (a Norwegian island in the Svalbard archipelago) on 8 September 1943.
Unternehmen Sizilien (Operation Zitronella) was supported by the battleships Tirpitz, Scharnhorst and the destroyers Erich Steinbrinck, Karl Galster, Theodor Riedel, Hans Lody, Z27, Z29, Z30, Z31 and Z33.

It is listed as 230. Küste-Abwehr-Infanterie-Division in some sources.
