Of special interest is the play "Richard III" which the director Jürgen Fehling used as a vehicle for lightly veiled criticism of the regime. It got the director into some problems with the authorities, but the artistic director of the theatre, Gustaf Gründgens (a friend of Görings wife Emmy), managed to protect him, he was however forced to avoid any further criticism of the regime in the other plays he directed there.
It should be noted in regard to the classics that they were normally performed in a way beneficial to the regime and they should not be thought of as "innocent" plays even though they were not the outright propaganda as those penned by Hanns Johst for example.
