Two different versions of this medal existed, one of the Finnish-speaking recipients ("Isänmaa 1941-1945") and one for the Swedish-speaking ones ("Fosterlandet 1941-1945"), the reverse were the same on both.

A clasp could be added to this medal for service in the Lapland War against the Germans, the text read "Lapin Sota" for the Finnish-speaking and "Lapplandskriget" for the Swedish-speaking.
