The 5. Jäger-Division was formed 6 July 1942 by the reorganization and redesignation of the 5. Leichte Infanterie-Division. Largely destroyed north of Berlin, the division crossed the Elbe and surrendered to the US Army on 2 and 3 May 1945 at Wittenberge and Lenzen respectively.
