The 282. Infanterie-Division was ordered formed by the Oberbefehlshaber West on 1 March 1943 in Cherbourg, France under the “Brunhilde” mobilization process from the Einsatzverbände of the 165. Reserve-Division (Einsatzverband Schacky) and the 182. Reserve-Division (Einsatzverband / Division Karl). The division staff was formed from the staff of Einsatzverband / Division Karl (formerly Gümbel).
The division was destroyed at Iaşi, Romania in August 1944. It was formally disbanded on 9 October 1944. The remnants were used for refitting the 76. Infanterie-Division and for reforming the 15. Infanterie-Division.
