The Infanterie-Division Neuhammer was formed 17 April 1944 at Truppenübungsplatz Neuhammer as a Schatten-Division (Shadow-Division, used to reinforce other units or to be upgraded into a normal division). It was used to strengthen 34. Infanterie-Divison in May 1944 and the staff formed the staff of 226. Infanterie-Division in June.
